Basic Philosophy Obedience according to your standards and values Dogs will be dogs and they never will become humans! A dog is entitled to a dog’s way of living. Before making a dog obedient, it is important to know why dogs in general do or do not do certain things. If an owner treats his dog in ways the dog doesn’t understand, the dog will develop irritating, possibly very irritating habits. It’s a thin line between natural behaviour and unwanted behaviour
A dog is led by the principal of survival of the species. Survival means bearing offspring, but it also implies fleeing in the face danger when necessary. When flight becomes impossible the threat will be attacked and driven away. This necessity makes it quite clear that some behaviour that may develop, we will consider as being selfish. This behaviour is however no more or no less then the fact that a dog will always choose the behaviour which will provide him with the biggest feeling of well being. In other words: The behaviour that makes the dog feel secure will always come forward. A habit will develop by repeating this behaviour in similar situations, because it provides a feeling of well being and it does not endanger the survival of the species. This brings us straight to the learning process. Skills are acquired through trial and error. The situation or surrounding is associated to earlier experiences and acquired skills are put into practice. Some examples are: pulling or aggression when on the lead, bad recall, hierarchy problems between dogs, individual behaviour in specific surroundings etc. This introduction clearly establishes the importance of a correct learning process and the experiences that go with it.
